Happen to be in town visiting my folks and went to the scrimmage today. Defense looked good. Henderson transfer is a man child. I like him. Offensive line looked big. Think we got a transfer in as well at tackle. He is the size of a house. Our backfield has some big shoes to fill. I don’t think chambers went but once or twice. Some first down losses for negative yards by 2’s and 3’s we just can’t have. Henry looked solid at wide out. He also didn’t get a lot of reps. A couple of other kids made some good catches, but I didn’t see who they were. A couple dropped balls that we need to haul in. I think Myers is going to be the guy after what I saw today. Myers had a long 60 yard completion to Henry for a touchdown. A couple of very tight window throws on 3rd downs to keep drives alive. He looked poised in the pocket and I thought made some good decisions to get rid of it when it wasn’t there. Just have to tighten up some stuff with timing with receivers. I think the Richesson and Koger kids will be good backups. Richesson is a strong looking kid. Missouri game will be a good test to see where we are. I don’t expect to go there and compete for 4 qtrs with a team like that, but I would like to see us moving the ball some. I still stick with my assessment that we will start out a bit rough, but think we pick up steam towards the end of the season. At least I hope that. Go Bears

Brown lacks basic management skills. Adding responsibility isn’t going to help. Collums wasn’t good by any stretch, but this isn’t an improvement. The program is stagnant and this season is going to be one of the worst in recent memory.

Well if it’s that bad then we’ll open a new chapter! No use worrying about something that hasn’t happened yet. End of last season definitely stunk, but I think there’s alot of excited about this year. Solid returning starters at several positions, so I’m looking forward to seeing the season.

Scott_Bevail_1 We will most definitely see. Season starts two weeks from tomorrow. UCA as a program prides itself in consistently having winning or none losing seasons. I think this year will be the same. Having new coordinators on both sides of the ball will win us a few games that we didn’t the past few years. The great thing about Coach Brown being at the helm for the offense is he won’t be able to make excuses for any poor performance/execution. It’s all on him.

As I am new to this board I don’t have much of a reference to what has gone on with the program in the past. I rely on some friends and tidbits that I can find here and there.

From what I have seen, Coach Brown was a terrific QB for UCA during his career and holds a basket full of team records. He obviously is a terrific person and an ambassador for the university. He seems to really have a love for the program and supposedly stated on more than one occasion that he is happy at UCA and doesn’t want to be any where else.

I’m thinking his job is safe as long as he wants to stay…

Final Scrimmage notes:

Austin Myers was first QB out. First play was long pass down the sideline to Tyrell Powell. Henry had some nice catches.
-Landen Chamber (Clear #1 RB), had a TD in red zone play. Played for a couple series then it looks like Jalen Washington and Dennis Gaines after him. Another big back played but he didn’t have a jersey number.
-#7 Ty Durham WR had some nice catches, played with the 1s.
-Haulmark looked like he was getting the 1st team snaps at TE, and had a catch.
-Looks like coach Brown will run a lot of option read plays in the shotgun, but that is most of college FB nowadays. Hard to simulate mobile QB plays in a scrimmage though since they can’t tackle the QB. I think it’ll be Myers starting at Mizzou, but Richesson ready, and Koger clear 3rd.

MountainBear Thanks for the summary for those of us who didn’t or couldn’t make it out. Did the defense look like the 1’s could put up a good fight against Missouri?

Hard to say, D line had some good QB rushes, no picks or anytime that I saw. Didn’t give up many long TDs, had some 3 and outs. Hard to guage though in a team scrimmage. I highly doubt we keep Mizzou below 35, it would take the Offense playing great and some lucky breaks for us to have a chance at an SEC home game. Heck the Razorbacks haven’t figured out how to win with an SEC roster. Never say never though. New QB for Mizzou too.

Was Richesson much better than Myers 2 weeks ago? One thing is it’s hard to gauge the ins and outs of practices over time or each qbs ability in the film room and huddle (recognizing coverages, huddle presence, audibles, etc.)

MountainBear my gauge was this. I only saw one kid move the ball the entire day and that was Myers. I think Koger did get in the end zone on a crossing route but Myers consistently moved it. Did anyone else score yesterday besides Myers?

Seems like Myers moved the ball a bit better than Richesson on Saturday from what I saw too. I know Richesson is a burly looking guy (225 lbs) who has decent speed so maybe brown likes him in a Tebow kinda way. Sam Lane had a great write up about the scrimmage. [

MountainBear Sam Lane says Myers had no mistakes and yet we aren’t any closer to naming a starting Qb. I don’t think it mattered what happened this fall Brown is playing 2 Qb’s. I see what he is trying to do I just hope it’s worth the squeeze. I do like your Tebow comparison in size for Richesson. He just seemed like he needs a little more experience. Sounds like according to him he has always been a pro style. If he can run that could be a good goal line package for us. I just wouldn’t feed him to the Tigers just yet. I also could see Koger moving up the depth chart. Had Powell been healthy last year and a pass or two would have been caught we might have ended up with 7-8 wins. I liked his heart.

I believe Nathan understands how important it is to have at least 2 qb’s with game experience. The Bears need an experienced #2 in case of injury or a bad game by QB1 (see Utah Tech game last year). We have not been too successful with inexperienced qb’s recently.

I hope the Bears play multiple QB’s before conference schedule starts.

Xbear83 yeah I never understood what we were doing on that front last year but I agree completely. Injuries happen. They didn’t want to bench Mcelvain for some reason. It’s ok kids have bad games. We just couldn’t pull the trigger.

I’m pretty sure he was the head coach last year. We refused to give game experience to anyone else. We couldn’t close out games and when we were in trouble we refused to make changes. I hope that philosophy changed.

Just saw there is the Purple & Gray Scrimmage today at 6:15. Looks like started off with a TD. I read an interesting tidbit about Petrino who firmly believes is more important for the offense to have an encouraging Fall Camp than the Defense. I can see that from a morale perspective.
